Neosho County falls within the Kansas Deer Management Unit 11, which covers a large swath of southeast Kansas. For turkey, it falls under Turkey Unit 6 (southeast Kansas). Both are over-the-counter resident units, though nonresident turkey permits require a draw. Deer tags are draw-only for nonresidents as well, with roughly 80% draw odds.

What Can You Harvest?

Neosho County is one of the most diverse hunting areas in Kansas:

• Whitetail deer — Neosho County along the Neosho River is considered some of the most coveted trophy buck country in the country. The combination of river bottoms, timber, and agriculture grows deer with exceptional genetics and mass.
• Eastern wild turkey — The timbered ridges along the Neosho River serve as excellent roosting habitat, providing consistent hunting opportunities throughout the season.
• Pheasant and quail — Present in the county, especially in CRP edges and native grass areas, though numbers are more variable than northwest Kansas.
• Furbearers — Coyote, raccoon, and other furbearers are common throughout. Unit 11 is flat to hilly, featuring woodlots and strips of brush and timber mixed in with farmland and pastures. Common trees include bur oak, pin oak, walnut, elm, cedar, hickory, and hackberry. More specifically, the terrain varies from fertile farmland to heavy timbered draws, open pastures, tree-choked fence lines, creek bottoms lined with white oaks, and blackjack-covered hilltops.
